Hard Tech, Hard Money: Fundraising in Hardware and IoT

13 min  •  3 lectures

Fundraising for hardware and Internet of Things (IoT) ventures requires a distinct strategy compared to software models. This course addresses the specific challenges of the hardware sector, including long research and development cycles, supply chain complexities, and inventory risks. Participants learn how to overcome the challenges associated with physical products by focusing on technical defensibility and operational readiness. The curriculum identifies the gap between prototyping and scaling, offering strategies to de-risk projects for deep tech and hard tech investors. By shifting the focus from product features to market necessity, founders can better navigate the initial hurdles of securing capital for physical assets. The training transitions from risk management to financial sustainability through the Hardware-as-a-Service (HaaS) model. It explains how to convert one-time device sales into predictable, recurring revenue streams, which are highly valued by venture capitalists. Key financial concepts such as the Bill of Materials (BOM), Cost of Goods Sold (COGS), and the ratio of Lifetime Value (LTV) to Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) are examined. Additionally, the course covers the logistical aspects of fundraising, including Design for Manufacturing (DfM) and the use of pilot data to demonstrate traction before full-scale production. Founders learn to identify the right mix of financial and strategic investors, such as corporate venture capital firms, to support global logistics and manufacturing. This series provides the tactical tools necessary to transform a prototype into a scalable physical-world ecosystem.
