Foley gives precise control. That control is what makes an artificial movie set feel physically real — the rustle of a jacket, a door handle turning. Those micro-sounds anchor us in the film's world. SPEAKER_1: And ambience is doing something different? SPEAKER_2: Completely different function. Ambient sound, including room tone and environmental noise, is crafted to maintain spatial continuity and enhance the scene's atmosphere. Without it, dialogue and effects sound artificially isolated, like they were recorded in a void. Ambience is the sonic glue holding a scene together. Then each layer is edited into separate stems: dialogue, effects, music. That separation allows rebalancing for different formats — cinema, streaming, broadcast — without rebuilding the entire mix.
